America's most tragic conflict ignited at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, when a chain reaction of social, economic and political events exploded into civil war. At the heart of these events was the issue of states rights versus federal authority flowing over the underlying issue of slavery.

Fort Moutrie - Sullivans Island, South Carolina
Fort Moultrie
Fort Moultrie's history covers 171 years of seacoast defense, including the first decisive victory in the American Revolution and the firing onto Fort Sumter during the first battle of the Civil War. The third Fort Moultrie, built in 1809, stands today. By touring the fort, visitors can see how coastal defenses have evolved.

The fort is open Daily, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Travel to Fort Moultrie by car: Both US I-26 and US I-526 lead to US-17, and US-17 leads to SC-703. Take US-17 North to Mt. Pleasant and turn right onto SC-703. At Sullivan's Island, turn right onto Middle Street. The fort is 1.5 miles from that intersection.

Feel free to tour the fort using the self-guided brochure. Attend special events when offered. Interpretive signs are posted throughout the fort. By using these signs and the park brochure, visitors guide themselves through the fort traveling back in time from World War II to the American Revolution. Ranger programs are given at various times.

Old Bethel United Methodist Church
Old Bethel United Methodist Church is the third oldest church building surviving in Charleston. The church is an architectural reminder of the significant relationship between African Americans and the Methodist Church in Charleston.

Central Baptist Church
Central Baptist Church is thought to be one of the first black churches founded and built solely by African Americans in Charleston. The congregation was founded in 1891 by members of the Morris Street Baptist Church, which lead the way in the formation of a Negro Baptist Church association in 1867 and a statewide organization in 1876. Designed by black architect John P. Hutchinson, the Central Baptist Church was completed in 1893 and was first used by the congregation in August of that year.
